Julia Vye has never been comfortable with the powers she gained during the War. Where did they come from? Why was she chosen to carry them? Why won't they just leave her alone? But when a new enemy threatens the Kingdom, Vye has to seek answers. She and her friends will brave ancient temples, test new-forged alliances, and challenge the innermost fears of their own minds...

Join Vye, Corthos, Landos, Flopson, and an all-star lineup of characters, both old and new, in this exciting sequel to, “Within the Hollow Crown.” This story contains strong language. Reader discretion is advised.

Years ago, a high school English teacher hammered home a few lessons about writing. The one that stuck: Avoid "to-be" verbs. Nothing slams on the breaks and yanks a reader out of what it was they were reading than leaning too heavy on unsupported combinations of "to-be" verbs. Or so I was told.

There are (see) a number of reasons to believe the truth of this lesson. Unfortunately, Daniel Antoniazzi's writing sits squarely amongst those lessons. The world building here is better than decent. Verging on downright good now and then. The humor, though perhaps a little too frequent and sometimes overly dry, is a pleasant diversion - though for a fantasy tale it relies far too heavily on things that exist in our world and thus, entirely outside of the context of the tale itself. Metaphors relying on things from our very real world are not a good way to infuse a fantasy tale with humor.

But the worst drag on these tales is the writing itself. Perhaps the author was aiming for an old-world, fairy tale like take. This might be the case. However, it kills the pacing of the tale. Frequent phrases, such as "There are places in the world" and "There were reasons for" slam the breaks on the story and remind us that we not immersed in a world in which things of importance are happening but rather experiencing things through the eyes of a narrator who, now and then, seems to almost forget where he or she was in the tale and struggle to find footing once more.

I almost gave this two stars. But for the world building and the somewhat interesting premise I would have done.

A Dagger of the Mind The Imperial Metals Book 2 edition by Daniel Antoniazzi Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The story is good, but the bad language used to express emotions or to describe behavior or comments is disgusting. There is no need to use four-letter words to make a point. I found the language disgusting and inappropriate for adults, let alone young readers. I will not be keeping this book or its companions in my library, nor will I buy any more books by this author.
Mr "A" delivers a great adventure again! We get to explore new lands, new villains, new heroes, and new depths to our old cast favorites. And a few surprises I didn't see coming. Check this one out for sure?
The story's scope deepens and tone darkens slightly as Antoniazzi delivers an excellent second installment to the series. The plot moves well as he shows how he can take what felt like a more-or-less standalone story in Hollow Crown and turn it into a series of continuing adventures. Every element feels right in place. Looking forward to seeing what more he can do in Book 3!
As great as the first book (which you must read first to understand this book).
Love this author's sense of humor in the story.
A great evil threatens the world with a twist, the protagonists can be infected to join the evil due to what is in their heart.
If you haven't already read the first one (Within the Hollow Crown), you should start there. This book would probably stand well on its own, but it is surely much better knowing the full story from WtHC. This one is another page-turner. It brings back many of the best characters from the first book, and adds some new ones.

If you have read WtHC, you should definitely read this. It places the events of that book in a broader context.

This book seems to have fewer footnotes than its predecessor, so for those reviewers who were turned off by the footnotes but liked the book otherwise, you should give this one a shot. (Although I don't really understand that complaint since the footnotes are easy enough to avoid reading if that's your preference.)

Looking forward to the next one.
Your favorite characters are back for another adventure in this follow up to Within The Hollow Crown.
A powerful new enemy is rising and familiar characters are joined by new faces as they must work together to stop the impending apocalypse. This book does a great job of remembering the elements that made the first book fun while still adding its own twists and turns to keep things fresh. Daniel does a great job of weaving his intricate plot through the book, giving you plenty of clues as to where he's heading, without telegraphing every punch. But even a savvy reader will find a surprising twist or two. If you enjoyed the first book, this one brings back the same wit and fun as we romp around the kingdom of Rone and the rest of this vast world.

I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series.
While I normally don't like books with alternating viewpoints, "A dagger of the mind" continued the series successfully by setting a fast pace that never let up for a minute.

As with the first book, you can still see some plot points coming from a million miles away, but that doesn't detract from the satisfaction of watching this story unfold and there were enough unexpected twists to keep you on your toes.

And, of course, the footnotes were a fun addition that really added to the story. Can't wait for number 3!
